Aurora

What the board has decided about this committee or office, and the reports it filed, most recent first. Generated from the published minutes.

These categorised views are best effort. They are read from the published minutes by a program, and what it can attribute to a committee depends on how each resolution happens to be worded — so a page may be incomplete, and nothing here overrides the minutes themselves. The raw minutes are the source of truth.

Please note. The board approves the minutes of a meeting at the meeting after it, and they are published then - so the most recent meeting is not usually here. ASF Members can read the draft in the board's own repository until it is.

## Description:
The mission of Aurora is the creation and maintenance of software related to
Mesos framework for long-running services and cron jobs.

## Issues:
There are no issues requiring board attention.

## Membership Data:
Apache Aurora was founded 2015-03-17 (5 years ago)
There are currently 23 committers and 22 PMC members in this project.
The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 1:1.

Community changes, past quarter:
- No new PMC members. Last addition was Mauricio Garavaglia on 2019-07-29.
- No new committers. Last addition was Mauricio Garavaglia on 2019-07-25.

## Project Activity:
We're in the middle of releasing a new version of our software. The voting is
currently open for the second RC for version 0.22.0 and only needs one more
vote to meet quorum. Mauricio Garavaglia has proven to be a very valuable and
very active addition to the PMC and has helped the project regain stability
after the departure of many folks including our former chair. With his help,
as the community health statistics show, we've been able to get more work
done, more fixes, and even land some new features into the master branch. We
will be looking to add more committers and possibly PMC members in the very
near future.

## Community Health:
dev@aurora.apache.org had a 50% increase in traffic in the past quarter (24
emails compared to 16) reviews@aurora.apache.org had a 53% increase in traffic
in the past quarter (95 emails compared to 62) 17 commits in the past quarter
(183% increase) 9 PRs closed on GitHub, past quarter (28% increase)

## Membership Data:

There are currently 23 committers and 22 PMC members in this project.
The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 1:1.

Community changes, past quarter:

- Mauricio Garavaglia was added as committer on 2019-07-25

## Project Activity:
No recent releases.
Last release on 2018-09-10.
Planning for next release has begun and we hope to ship version 0.22.0
before the year ends.

## Community Health:
We have experienced a small surge in activity thanks to new developers
joining. The following metrics corroborate this increase in engagement:

9 PRs opened on GitHub, past quarter (900% increase)
7 PRs closed of GitHub, past quarter (700% increase)
6 commits in the past quarter (600% increase)
reviews@aurora.apache.org had a 1300% increase in traffic in the
past quarter (70 emails compared to 5)

We hope the project is able to sustain this level of engagement
as well as increasing the number of participants who are helping to maintain
this project.

Outside of a few members, responsiveness on the mailing list has decreased.
We hope to re-engage folks as they see more activity happening on the project.

Stephan Erb (serb) submitted the following report:

Dear Apache Board,

The Apache Aurora project will not be able to deliver a board report as
requested.

We are currently not matching the required number of PMC members and don't
have an active Chair. I have just raised this to the users and dev list to see
if the community is willing to step up.

I will inform the board if there are any updates.

## Description:

Apache Aurora is a stateless and fault tolerant service scheduler used to
schedule jobs onto Apache Mesos such as long-running services, cron jobs, and
one off tasks.

## Issues

The project might be heading towards the Apache Attic in the future, unless
the community interest increases again. We will need advice on when and how we
should make this transition.

## Health report

The Apache Aurora project has seen a significant slowdown of user and
contributor activity over the most recent months. This can partially be
attributed to the overall stability and maturity of the project, but more
importantly this is due to other external projects that managed to win the
developer mindshare within the container orchestration field
(e.g., general purpose cloud providers, Kubernetes, ...).

Aurora has been under active development for this period, with strong
community engagement. We have placed deliberate effort to build release
notes as we iterate towards future releases, which has received positive
 feedback from users.

## Description:

Apache Aurora lets you use an Apache Mesos cluster as a private cloud. It
supports running long-running services, cron jobs, and ad-hoc jobs.

## Activity:
 - Release planning underway (0.10.0)
 - Major effort recently for official installable packages (RPMs and debs)
   - released of debs for 0.9.0, close to release of RPMs
   - preparing infrastructure for nightly packages

## Health report:
There has been healthy development on Aurora for this period, though we hope to
see more growth in adoption, contributions, and committers. There has been
significant effort to make alternatives to Aurora (e.g. Kubernetes, Marathon)
easy to install and use, and Aurora is relatively more complicated to evaluate.
Packaging and better introductory documentation will our focus to address this.

Apache Aurora is a service scheduler used to schedule jobs onto Apache Mesos.

Project Status
---------
Since our last 0.8.0 release Apache Aurora has been working on bug fixes and
packaging (deb, rpm) to help users with the install process. Design
discussions for health checks have been occurring on the mailing list and
progress has started towards our next release candidate (0.9.0) and we hope to
make it available in the next two weeks.

## Description:

Aurora is a service scheduler used to schedule jobs onto Apache Mesos.

## Activity:

- Graduated from the Incubator in March.
- Promising adoption increase in the last 3 months: increased dev@ and IRC
activity, and patches from the community.
- Community activity has identified some promising candidates to add as
  committers and/or PMC members.
- Release and deprecation processes are starting to take shape, making for a
  clear development path between releases.
- 0.8.0 release is likely to be cut in April.

## Issues:

No major issues. We endured a long bout of CI noise due to Jenkins slave
flakiness (INFRA-9019, now resolved), but continue to face a whack-a-mole of
other related issues.

## PMC/Committership changes

- New PMC member: Zameer Manji, 2014-01-14
- New committer: Joshua Cohen, 2015-02-02

## Releases

Last release: 0.7.0-incubating, Release Date: Feb 05, 2015

## Mailing list activity

- dev@aurora.apache.org:
  - 126 subscribers
  - 487 e-mails in the last 3 months [1]

## JIRA activity

- 264 JIRA tickets created in the last 3 months [2]
- 176 JIRA tickets closed/resolved in the last 3 months [3]
