Board history: Brooklyn

Brooklyn

What the board has decided about this committee or office, and the reports it filed, most recent first. Generated from the published minutes.

These categorised views are best effort. They are read from the published minutes by a program, and what it can attribute to a committee depends on how each resolution happens to be worded — so a page may be incomplete, and nothing here overrides the minutes themselves. The raw minutes are the source of truth.

Please note. The board approves the minutes of a meeting at the meeting after it, and they are published then - so the most recent meeting is not usually here. ASF Members can read the draft in the board's own repository until it is.

2023-05-17 — Geoff Macartney

## Description:
The mission of Apache Brooklyn is the creation and maintenance of software
related to a software framework for modeling, monitoring and managing cloud
applications through autonomic blueprints.

## Issues:
As was noted in April's Apache jclouds report, its PMC intend to move
jclouds to the Attic. We in the Brooklyn community were among those
who took part in the conversation but it hasn't been possible to find
people with time to commit to the maintenance of jclouds.

There has been a little discussion on the Brooklyn mailing list about
what to do when jclouds moves to the Attic but at this time it's
still unclear what we will do when this happens. Possibly we can
continue using jclouds as it is for now and, if we need any bug
or security fixes, we can fork and make these as we need them. But
as we only use a smallish subset of jclouds this won't equate to
enough effort to keep jclouds going as a project.

## Project Activity:

- The last major Brooklyn release was 1.0.0, released on 3rd March 2020.

## Community Health:

- There has been significant engagement during this quarter with the Apache
jclouds community, discussing the proposed move of jclouds to the Attic.
As this is one of our main dependencies this is clearly of concern to us.
- Unfortunately it appears after much discussion that there are not enough
people with sufficient bandwidth to contribute to the maintenance of jclouds,
so the Attic seems to be the right next step. See last month's jclouds board
  report for more details.
- It is unclear what the implications of this for Brooklyn will be. We will need
to have a discussion on the mailing list, establish a plan and carry it out.
Options seem to include forking (part of?) jclouds, or writing a minimal
replacement within Brooklyn. More radical changes might also be possible,
which might require changes in the Brooklyn model.

## Project Activity:
We are delighted to announce the release of Apache Brooklyn 1.0.0 in this
past quarter. You may already have seen the announcement at
https://s.apache.org/m05ao. I can put it no better than in the words
of Richard Downer, the release manager:

Brooklyn has been an Apache project since 2014, and we spent the first few
years figuring out the cloud landscape, the ideal expression for
applications, the best API and UI. We've now stabilised these and many
other decisions, and we have been confident for some time that Brooklyn is
"production quality" and we, the PMC and the community, can support it for
the long term. Therefore, it was time to stamp it "1.0.0".

I'd like to thank everyone involved in bringing Brooklyn to 1.0.0 - there
are many people, no longe actively involved, who contributed code back in
the early days that is still here and actively used in Brooklyn today - and
on the flip side, we have new contributors who have just started making
their first contributions to Brooklyn in the last few months. All of you
are very important to this project. Thank you all!

## Community Health:
- The project continues with a recently high turnover of pull requests and
  commits.
- We continue to monitor our community for potential new committers and PMC
members with the aim of regularly adding individuals.

## Project Activity:
I am very pleased to report that there has been considerable activity recently
to prepare the 1.0.0 release of Apache Brooklyn, with many pull requests to
fix outstanding issues and concerns. A candidate release was made, but some
issues were found with it which we want to take a little more time to address.
However, I am confident that Brooklyn 1.0.0 is imminent.

## Description:
 - Apache Brooklyn is a software framework for modelling, monitoring and
managing cloud applications through autonomic blueprints.

## Issues:
 - there are no issues requiring board attention at this time

## Activity:
 - Development continues with a regular turnover of pull requests submitted
and merged. We are pleased that the new UI has drawn some initial commits
   from new contributors.
 - Rather than making a 1.0.0 release of Brooklyn in the summer, we decided we
would benefit from an interim release first, given that the new UI is so
recent. Accordingly we have released Apache Brooklyn 1.0.0-M1 as a first
milestone on our way to an official 1.0.0 release.

## Health report:
 - The project continues with a regular turnover of pull requests and commits,
especially around the new UI that was contributed in May.
 - We continue to monitor our community for potential new committers and PMC
members with the aim of regularly adding individuals (see "PMC Changes").

managing cloud applications through autonomic blueprints.

## Issues:
 - there are no issues requiring board attention at this time

## Activity:
 - Development continues with a regular turnover of pull requests submitted
   and merged.
 - We are happy to announce [1] that our users at Fujitsu, UShareSoft, and
Cloudsoft have generously sponsored the contribution of a new and modern UI
for Apache Brooklyn. This is based on the previously-proprietary Cloudsoft
AMP UI, for those of you familiar with that.
 - As part of the work for the new UI, we have overhauled the scripts we use
to generate LICENSE/NOTICE file inclusions, to be sure to include all the
required licenses, distinguish between source and binary licenses, and
support auto-recognition of license by Github [2].

## Health report:
 - The project continues with a regular turnover of pull requests and commits.
Development is continuing and users are feeding back their problems and
   feature suggestions.
 - We continue to monitor our community for potential new committers and PMC
members with the aim of regularly adding individuals. On this occasion, we
have been delighted to welcome Duncan Grant as a new committer to the
project. Duncan has been a consistent contributor for a long time not only
in terms of code and docs contributions to Brooklyn but also through code
reviews and responding to requests and queries on IRC. He has a very good
   knowledge of Brooklyn.

## PMC changes:

 - Currently 15 PMC members.

 - Duncan Grant was added as a committer on Wed Jun 13 2018

## Releases:

 - Last release was 0.12.0 on Wed Sep 27 2017
 - We had previously discussed doing a 1.0 release around this time, but with
the introduction of the new UI it seems prudent to allow some time for any
integration issues to be uncovered and fixed, after which we can release
   1.0 with the new look.

## Description:

- Apache Brooklyn Project is a software framework for modelling, monitoring
and managing cloud applications through autonomic blueprints.

## Issues:

- There are no issues requiring board attention at this time.

## Activity:

- Development continues with a regular turnover of pull requests submitted
  and merged.
- We had previously proposed two candidate Google Summer of Code projects,
one for a new UI and one for improved authentication mechanisms. However,
while there were a number of expressions of interest and some proposed
projects, we did not find that any of them met the criteria sufficiently
  for us to accept them.
- Richard Downer stepped down as PMC chair and I (Geoff Macartney, geomacy)
  have taken up the role.

## Health report:

- The project continues with a regular turnover of pull requests and commits.
It has been a relatively quiet quarter compared to previous ones in terms
of the number of commits, however development is continuing and users are
feeding back their problems and feature suggestions.
- We continue to monitor our community for potential new committers and PMC
members with the aim of regularly adding individuals. On this occasion,
there have been no new appointments since our last report.

## PMC changes:

## Releases:

 - Last release was 0.12.0 on Wed Sep 27 2017
 - There has been dev list discussion about releasing a 1.0.0 version of
Brooklyn. While no firm date has been set, the consensus seems to be that
we are close to being able to do that, and I expect discussions about a
suitable date for the release will happen during the summer.

## Description:
- Apache Brooklyn Project is a software framework for modelling, monitoring
and managing cloud applications through autonomic blueprints.

## Issues:
- Other than a resolution to change the PMC chair (see below), there are no
issues requiring board attention at this time.

## Activity:
- Development continues with a regular turnover of pull requests submitted and
  merged.
- We have discussed possible Google Summer of Code projects, and two such
  projects were nominated for GSoC.
- I (Richard Downer) have announced my desire to step down as PMC chair, once
the PMC have nominated a successor. The PMC voted to recommend Geoff
Macartney (geomacy) as the new PMC Chair. A resolution to this effect has
been added to the agenda for this board meeting.

## Health report:
- The project continues with a similar level of activity that we have seen
recently. There is a regular turnover of pull requests and commits, and JIRA

have been a good opportunity to spread awareness of the project
which we were unfortunately unable to take advantage of. However we
have had representation at ApacheCon Europe for the last two years
and expect this to continue this year.

Description:
Apache Brooklyn Project is a software framework for modeling,
monitoring and managing cloud applications through autonomic
  blueprints.

Issues:
 - There are no issues requiring board attention at this time

Activity:
 - Our source code repository reorganisation is complete and we are
now using multiple repositories for different modules of our project.
This means that our incubator repository is no longer in use.
 - This means that the bulk of the graduation tasks are completed. We
will conduct a final review of our graduation tasks and tie up any
loose ends as soon as possible.
 - Having completed the repository reorganisation, we aim to release a
new version (0.9.0) as soon as possible.

Health report:
 - With regular code contributions and merges, new users on mailing
lists, and turnover of JIRA tickets, we are satisfied with the
   health of the project.

PMC changes:

 - Currently 11 PMC members.
 - No new PMC members since our last report.

Description:
Apache Brooklyn Project is a software framework for modeling,
monitoring and managing cloud applications through autonomic
  blueprints.

Issues:
 - There are no issues requiring board attention at this time

Activity:
 - The holiday season saw a slow-down in activity, but development has
picked up again. Code is being contributed and merged at a regular
pace, and new users continue to appear on the mailing lists.
 - We are moving through the post-graduation task list. Our main focus
is on migrating our source code repository; we are using the move
from incubator to TLP as an opportunity to reorganise our source code
from a single monolithic repository to a small number of repositories
focussed on distinct modules of the project. The new structure has
been collectively decided and is now in place in the single
repository; what remains is the physical split and move to the
   multiple new repositories.
 - As soon as the graduation tasks are complete, we aim to release a new
version (0.9.0) as soon as possible.

Health report:
 - With regular code contributions and merges, new users on mailing
lists, and turnover of JIRA tickets, we are satisfied with the
health of the project (aside from the earlier observation about the
   holiday season).

2015-09-16 — in the Incubator's report

Brooklyn is a framework for modelling, monitoring, and managing applications
through autonomic blueprints.

Brooklyn has been incubating since 2014-05-01.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

1. One more release (under way)
2. Podling Name Search (under way)
3.

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

The Brooklyn community is active, growing, increasingly diverse and doing
very well. Chip (champion) suggested a couple of weeks back that the
community should start discussing graduation.

How has the community developed since the last report?

The 0.7.0 release got out with only minor comments about a month ago. A
0.8.0 version is being prepared that addresses the comments and should be
out shortly.

There are 2 new committers and PPMC members that joined, plus a 3rd one
currently under vote.

How has the project developed since the last report?

Very active, growing community.
A couple of presentations at LinuxCon in Seattle in Aug.
Talks scheduled for ApacheCon, Budapest in Oct.

Date of last release:

2015-07-27 (0.7.0)

When were the last committers or PMC members elected?

2015-08-06 (svet)
(one more under vote)

2015-06-17 — in the Incubator's report

Brooklyn is a framework for modelling, monitoring, and managing applications
through autonomic blueprints.

Brooklyn has been incubating since 2014-05-01.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

  1. Grow the community
  2. More diversity of the committers/PPMC (currently biased towards
     employees of a single organization)
  3. Following up our first release with further, regular, releases

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

  None.

How has the community developed since the last report?

Our community continues to grow slowly but surely, and every month
receives interest and contributions from new community members. In
particular, Brooklyn's recent integrations with Cloud Foundry have
brought some interest from that community into ours.

How has the project developed since the last report?

Code continues to be proposed and merged at a high rate. We are
  satisfied with our technical velocity.

We plan to follow up our December release with a further release
as soon as we can, and following this up with regular releases.
We plan to add binary convenience bundles to our next release and
have been working on complying with the appropriate licensing
  documentation for this purpose.

Date of last release:

  2014-12-23 (apache-brooklyn-0.7.0-M2-incubating)

When were the last committers or PMC members elected?

  No change since 2014-07-02.

Chip Childers (chipchilders):

The Brooklyn community is doing very well in learning the rules /
policies / nuances of working at the ASF. It still needs a bit more time
to build up a diverse community IMO, but things are looking good.

David Nalley (ke4qqq):

The Brooklyn folks kicked out their first release during this reporting
cycle, which is an important milestone. Work still remains in terms of
  building a diverse community.

highly interesting to our project.

How has the project developed since the last report?

No major changes from the last report; we are well-settled into our
new home and commits are being made at a regular rate. Preparation for
our first release continues.

We neglected to mention in last month's report about the completion of
a code grant for the "camp-server" component. This is a crucial
component of Brooklyn, and deserves its place in Brooklyn, rather than
an external dependency where we would have no control over release
schedules and bug fixing. So we are grateful to the donor, Cloudsoft,
for passing this component to Apache Brooklyn.
