Droids

What the board has decided about this committee or office, and the reports it filed, most recent first. Generated from the published minutes.

These categorised views are best effort. They are read from the published minutes by a program, and what it can attribute to a committee depends on how each resolution happens to be worded — so a page may be incomplete, and nothing here overrides the minutes themselves. The raw minutes are the source of truth.

Please note. The board approves the minutes of a meeting at the meeting after it, and they are published then - so the most recent meeting is not usually here. ASF Members can read the draft in the board's own repository until it is.

create and extend existing droids (robots).

Droids has been incubating since 2008-10-09.

Shepherd/Mentor notes:

johndament:
Did not report. Podling seems to be in bad shape. Prior reports
  indicated similar issues.

1. Activity
2. Name Search

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

None.

Name search needs to be concluded. Availability looks better this quarter
for completing that task.

2. Name Search

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be

We need to continue the name search. Branding has replied to the issue and
provided additional searches that need to performed. It is hoped that
these can be finished in the new couple weeks.

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

None. The previous goal of conducting the name search was not met due to
time availability. Outlook is much more promising this quarter.

How has the community developed since the last report?
No change. Name search is one big outstanding piece to complete, and it is
rather intimidating. It is hoped that one of the more experienced individuals
will have time to complete it this quarter. That should help with
participation once the final name is known.

Shepherd/Mentor notes:

John Ament (johndament):

Droids is a long standing podling, with a robust code base but without
much need for frequent releases. I think graduating into an existing
TLP (not their own TLP) would be a good resolution, it helps avoid some
of the over head of many binding votes to carry on while still
maintaining an area to work in. The people working on droids were fast
to respond and give feedback on what's happening, but like is mentioned
the list is not very active (in the past 6 months, the main
conversations going on were around status of the project).

How has the community developed since the last report?

There has been no change in the community. The summer months have been
very quiet. There are enough active people for a viable PMC.

There has been no change in the active members of the community.
There are enough active people to form a viable PMC.

How has the project developed since the last report?

Development this quarter has been slow after the flury of development
last quarter. The codebase has a decent level of maturity, so a lot of
changes isn't expected.

Droids has been incubating since 2008-10-09.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

  1. Diversity is still an issue for the podling. Activity has picked up in
the recent months, helping with the diversity of those involved.
  2. A different name is most likely needed. Droid is now largely associated
     with Android.

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be aware of?
  None.

How has the community developed since the last report?

Commons was approached to see if that was a viable option for graudation.
It is unsure that would be a good fit. Other TLPs may be a better fit,
but it is unknown how sub-projects would be handled or if they would be
  allowed.

Development activity has picked up in the past two months, since just
before Christmas. Most of the development is by one developer, but others
have been involved. If this level of activity continues for the next month,
Droids may be ready for graduation.

How has the project developed since the last report?

Development activity has greatly increased in the recent months.
There have been strides to make the code base cleaner, and easier to use.

2012-11-21 — in the Incubator's report

Droids is an Incubator project arrived from Apache Labs. Droids entered
incubation on October, 2008.

It's an intelligent standalone robot framework that allows one to create
and extend existing web robots.

Issues before graduation :

Diversity is still an issue for the podling. More activity will
  help the diversity problem.

Commons was very recently contacted to see what options exist for
graduating into Commons and if it would be beneficial for both communities.

Recent Activity:

Apache Droids incubating 0.2 was released on August 9th, 2012.
This marks the second release for the project.

Members of the community met up at ApacheCon EU to discuss ideas and options.
In accordance with ASF guidelines, no voteable decisions were made during
  those discussions.

Activity is still an issue for the podling. The podling has attempted
to make its second release. However, it is having difficulty securing
the necessary votes from IPMC members. The difficulty in making a release
discourages activity.

It was discussed on general@i.a.o by IPMC members after last quarter's
report that it might be possible to graduate into Commons. The project
has not approached the Commons PMC about this possibility at this time,
but will be explored in the next quarter.

Tobias Rübner has been voted in and added as a committer and PPMC member.

is a step towards remedying that.

Richard Frovarp has been added as a mentor to the project.

IP clearance has been taken care of and was done prior to the release that
was performed. That issue should not have been in the last report.

Issues before graduation :

The biggest obstacle for graduation is obtaining a diverse group of active
committers. 95% of the commits over the past 6 months were by a single
committer. The project needs to engage the committers that exist and
identify new people to bring into the project. The goal for the next
quarter is to elicit more activity.

The last three months have been very productive and focused on our first

concern about the absence of binding votes of IPMC members. This leaded to
abort the first release. In the last member meeting we selected one of our
Droids committer as member and he subscribed now to the incubator PMC to
have a binding vote as well.
