Board history: Felix

ASF Oak Leaf Icon

Felix

What the board has decided about this committee or office, and the reports it filed, most recent first. Generated from the published minutes.

These categorised views are best effort. They are read from the published minutes by a program, and what it can attribute to a committee depends on how each resolution happens to be worded — so a page may be incomplete, and nothing here overrides the minutes themselves. The raw minutes are the source of truth.

Please note. The board approves the minutes of a meeting at the meeting after it, and they are published then - so the most recent meeting is not usually here. ASF Members can read the draft in the board's own repository until it is.

## Community Health:
- Overall the project is in ok health with very little ongoing activity.
- There is a decline in community activity and in general, we don't see a lot
of new development right now. We are at the lookout for new topics and
contributors but for now, we started reducing our surface area by retiring
components that haven't seen activity in while and don't have a clear
commitment to be maintained by somebody. Hopefully, that will lessen the
  load on the existing maintainers.
- Questions on the user list are answered, development concerns are either
discussed on the mailing list or directly in the JIRA issues.
- We had no issues voting on releases and JIRA issues are generally addressed.

* Discussed the proper way to handle version numbers for canceled release
votes (e.g., canceling a release vote to fix an issue). The community was
split between allowing the version number to be reused on the subsequent
release versus disallowing it. Since there was no consensus, we decided
to not enforce a policy and simply let the person performing the release
  decide.

Licensing and other issues

    * Regarding the issue raised in last board report of how to handle
provisional OSGi API in Felix bundles, we have decided for now
that the best approach is to avoid it and use our own parallel API
structure or subclassing where appropriate. Our provisional OSGi
      API policy is documented at
      http://felix.apache.org/site/provisional-osgi-api-policy.html in
      our developer documentation.

    * Karaf subproject promoted to TLP.
    * Need to have discussion on how to handle provisional OSGi APIs in our
releases. It is not clear if we should include provisional OSGi API
since it is not officially released by the OSGi Alliance and is
therefore subject to change and/or not always officially sanctioned
(i.e., made publicly available by the OSGi Alliance). At a minimum, we
need to define an approach to informing users if provisional API is
included that it is not [yet] official OSGi API.

1.2.2) to address a security bug.
   * Released version 1.4.0 of Felix (includes Framework 1.4.0, Main
1.4.0, Bundle Repository 1.2.1); this was a fairly major release
including support for features from the coming OSGi R4.2
specification and many more resolved compliance issues and small bugs.
   * Released various other subprojects (e.g., iPOJO 1.0.0, Web Console
1.2.0, Remote Shell 1.0.2, SCR 1.0.6, Maven SCR Plugin 1.0.8,
     Maven Bundle Plugin 1.4.3).
   * Released subproject bundles are now available via an OBR
repository for easy deployment into Felix (and other OSGi frameworks).
   * Various fixes and enhancements to HTTP Service subproject,
including improved alias resolution, better cache support with
inclusion of Last Modified timestamps, and publishing actual ports
     used as service properties.

Licensing and other issues

   * Need to investigate licensing issue for a JMX admin console
     contribution.

Community

    * Presented iPOJO at the OSGi Community Event in Berlin in June.
    * Added committers Edward Yakop and Makas Lau for Log Service
      contribution.
    * Received a contribution from Dieter Wimberger for a bundle that provides
simple remote telnet access to the Felix shell.
    * Receiving web site documentation contributions from Richard Jackson;
Richard has been granted karma to modify the wiki for his contributions.

Software

    * Still working on incorporating the new Log Service contribution from
PAX; largely delayed due to a naming issue and lack of time.
    * Release version 1.2.0 of Felix (includes Framework 1.2.0, Main 1.2.0,
Shell 1.0.2, Shell TUI 1.0.2, Bundle Repository 1.2.0). This release
marks the first steps toward bundle fragment support in Felix, which is
      one of the last major hurdles to full OSGi R4 specification compliance;
however, there is still plenty of work to be done to complete this
      feature.
    * Released various other subprojects (e.g., iPOJO, UPnP, SCR, Maven SCR
Plugin, Maven Bundle Plugin, File Install).
    * Working on creating an official bundle repository to make it easier for
      the community to use subprojects.

Licensing and other issues

    * None.

Community

* Added Stuart McCulloch to the PMC.
* Added Christian van Spaandonk as a committer to work on Deployment Admin.

Software

* Released {{1.0.1}} version of core Felix sub-projects (i.e., framework
and main). This release fixed mostly minor bugs discovered since the
prior release, although there were a few minor new features added as
  well.
* Released {{1.0.3}} release of Felix framework/main subprojects; which
included numerous bug fixes and feature ehancements (including support
for running the framework on Google's Android).
* Released numerous other subprojects, including Bundle Plugin, SCR
Plugin, OBR Plugin, Preferences, Config Admin, Metatype, Event Admin,
  and Bundle Repository.
* Finalized Deployment Admin contribution from Luminis and committed it
  to our SVN repository.
* Finalized Peter Kriens' contribution of the File Install bundle and
committed it to our SVN repository.
* Karl Pauls committed a significant patch that adds more complete
security framework to the Felix framework and also provides
implementations for security-related OSGi standard services (e.g.,
Permission Admin and Conditional Permission Admin); these
improvements will be made available in a future release.

Licensing and other issues

* None this period.

Community

   * Added Felix Meschberger to the PMC.
   * Presented at ApacheCon in Atlanta; see writeup at InfoQ^
     <http://www.infoq.com/news/2007/12/felix-osgi-container>.
   * Discussion was raised on the mailing lists about defining a road
map for officially releasing more subprojects. The general
consensus is that we really need to start working on releases of
all reasonably stable subprojects. Hopefully, this will start to
happen over the next month or two.
   * Peter Kriens announced his desire to donate his FileInstall
bundle; the paperwork has been started, but an official vote is
     needed.
   * Karl Pauls announced that he was able to get Felix working on
     Google's Android, see his blog^
     <http://blog.luminis.nl/luminis/entry/osgi_on_google_android_using>;
we need to determine if we can incorporate his changes into the trunk.

Software

   * Released 1.0.1 version of core Felix sub-projects (i.e., framework
and main). This release fixed mostly minor bugs discovered since
the prior release, although there were a few minor new features
     added as well.
   * Preparing 1.0.2 release of core Felix sub-projects (i.e.,
framework and main); changes to include:
o Refinements to specification interpretation and/or
           compliance. (FELIX-383)
o Additional improvements to make the framework easier to
           embed in other projects. (FELIX-359, FELIX-380, FELIX-388,
           FELIX-393, FELIX-414, FELIX-428)
         o Various small bug fixes. (FELIX-371, FELIX-381, FELIX-394,
           FELIX-416)
   * Updates to numerous subprojects, including iPOJO, Bundle Plugin,
     and SCR Plugin.
   * Clement Escoffier introduced the Maven OBR plugin, which makes it
possible for us to generate bundle repository files for deploying
bundles, which has been integrated with the Bundle Plugin.

Licensing and other issues

   * The paperwork for Peter Kriens' grant was incorrectly recorded
(his name, the company name, and the donated code were all
misspelled), so we are trying to get that fixed.
   * Need to finalize OSGi TCK access by getting OSGi Alliance TCK
license executed by the board, I would assume.

framework, including various sub-project releases to support the
framework (e.g., Maven plugin for creating bundles, shell-related
bundles for interacting with the framework, etc.)
   * Uncovered and resolved a couple minor bugs in the 1.0.0 release,
so a 1.0.1 release is already in the works.
   * Fixed a number of concurrency issues in the Config Admin and

of performance (by adding package indexing to the framework resolver).
    * Added experimental features to Felix to flesh out some potential
ideas for next OSGi specification; these features are trying to
deal with scenarios such as byte code injection in modules.
    * Other various smallish improvement and minor bug fix commits.

Licensing and other issues

    * None.
