Logo Development

What the board has decided about this committee or office, and the reports it filed, most recent first. Generated from the published minutes.

These categorised views are best effort. They are read from the published minutes by a program, and what it can attribute to a committee depends on how each resolution happens to be worded — so a page may be incomplete, and nothing here overrides the minutes themselves. The raw minutes are the source of truth.

Please note. The board approves the minutes of a meeting at the meeting after it, and they are published then - so the most recent meeting is not usually here. ASF Members can read the draft in the board's own repository until it is.

Reports

2025-08-20 — Daniel Gruno

The Logo Development committee concluded its second round of polling in July
of 2025. The consensus of the committee is that we have found a logo candidate
with general approval of the foundation membership, and will be presenting the
proposed candidate to the board.

The committee has furthermore agreed, by consensus, to submit a resolution to
disband the logo development committee, should the board be satisfied that the
task of the committee has been completed.

Some members of the committee that have expressed the idea of continuing with
a logo development committee for the sake of aiding projects looking for
either new logos or redesigning older ones, though the general feeling seems
to be that this is outside the mission/remit of the committee, and would be
better suited for Marketing & Publicity to handle.

## Description:
The mission of Apache Logo Development is the creation and maintenance of
software related to Creation and development of a brand and logo for the
Foundation

## Project Status:
Current project status: Ongoing, moderate activity
Issues for the board: No issues for the board at the moment.

## Membership Data:
Apache Logo Development was founded 2024-08-21 (a year ago)
There are currently 16 committers and 15 PMC members in this project.
The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 1:1.

Community changes, past quarter:
- No new PMC members. Last addition was Melissa Logan on 2024-08-28.
- No new committers. Last addition was Chris Wells on 2025-04-11.

## Project Activity:
We are gearing up for the second round of polling for the new logo, and expect
to notify the membership next week (week starting July 14th). This will be a
ranked choice poll and possibly (but not guaranteed) the final poll conducted,
depending on whether we have a clear winner or not.

As far as an overall timeline for the Logo Development project is concerned,
I would say a conservative estimate would be two to three months before we
have a final recommendation for the board, depending on the outcome of the
second round of polling.

## Community Health:
No changes worth noting here. Activity ebbs and flows on an individual level.

Description: The mission of Apache Logo Development is the creation and
maintenance of software related to Creation and development of a brand and
logo for the Foundation

Project Status: Current project status: Ongoing, low-to-moderate activity

Membership Data:

Apache Logo Development was founded 2024-08-20 (9 months
ago).

There are currently 16 committers and 15 PMC members in this project.
The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 8:7.

Community changes, past quarter:
- One PMC member resigned on 2025-05-05
- Chris Wells was added as committer on 2025-04-10

Project Activity:

After some initial conversations about the outcome of the
first poll, it was decided to move forward with cleaning up and revising the
_top three_ logos from the last members' poll, and action was taken to send
these logo concepts to the designer used initially by the BSC, for refinement
using specs outlined by the project[2].

When this refinement has concluded, we will announce the second round of
polling to the membership.

Community Health:

Progress is being made, albeit slowly. Some lazy consensus
decisions have (from what I have observed) helped move the needle in some more
technical areas of the process where conversations have stalled a bit.

## Description:
The mission of Apache Logo Development is the creation and maintenance of
software related to Creation and development of a brand and logo for the
Foundation

## Project Status:
Current project status: Ongoing, low-to-moderate activity Issues for the
board: No issues as such, although we have requested a line item for graphics
works, which should be reflected in the proposed budget.

## Membership Data:
Apache Logo Development was founded 2024-08-20 (8 months ago) There are
currently 17 committers and 16 PMC members in this project. The
Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 9:8.

Community changes, past quarter:
- No new PMC members. Last addition was Melissa Logan on 2024-08-27.
- Chris Wells was added as committer on 2025-04-10

## Project Activity:
A budget was submitted to the president based on received quotes for the
graphics cleanup needed for the top logo candidates going into round two.

There remains some uncertainty on the question of whether we proceed with the
top three or top five of the candidates, but hopefully that should be cleared
up soon.

Once we have contracted and received the cleaned-up logos, we will announce
the second round of polling to the membership.

## Community Health:
Nothing worth noting for this month. The committee remains the same. There is
an informational typo in this report's Community Changes section, but that is
due to a username change for Chris Wells.

## Project Activity:
The first round poll for the best suited logo candidate has begun, and will
end on March 20th. Once we have the results from that poll, we will condense
the list of candidates for the second round and look at refining some of the
candidates to make them more viable for the final round(s).

## Community Health:
No changes to committee size. Overall the project is working as intended.
Nothing to report here, really.

## Project Activity:
The committee has successfully set up a test vote that allows for both a
summary and in-depth view of all the design candidates, and is currently
testing to make sure everything works as intended.

The tentative plan (being worked on right now) is to call for a first round of
voting on March 13th through 20th (a seven day period), then assess the
results, refine the candidate list and have the final candidate ideas reviewed
and polished by professional designers. We will then call a second round of
votes at a later point in time. We hope the chair will also announce this
first date at the annual members' meeting in March.

Once the date has been set for the first round, we'll work on an instructional
document that relays our intentions and expectations for the first round to
the membership.

## Community Health:
No material changes in the makeup of the committee this past quarter.
This was expected, so there really isn't anything to report on.

## Project Activity:
Work is underway to set up the voting mechanisms for conducting test voting,
ensuring our tooling works with the voting platform and can be deployed when
we get closer to the official vote. There are some technical issues to
coordinate with infrastructure, but we have no concerns at present that this
would present any form of blocker. Once we have conducted the tests to
satisfaction, we will begin discussing the official vote and the messaging
around it. It is my personal expectation that the committee will be able to
reach this point in the coming month.

## Community Health:
No updates of note. The roster has remained the same since last report, and
we are slowly getting back into the groove after the holidays.

## Project Status:

Current project status: board concern: mild

### Work Efforts

The PMC is in-process of preparing a ballot for presentation to the
Membership. The current discussion is whether to try to rush this
before the late-December holidays, or simply wait until the New
Year. Given that ballot language has not been decided upon, and will
likely require much discussion, it certainly appears the ballot will
appear in January. The PMC will likely run a test/empty ballot in
December to test the desired process.

The set of candidate logos to be presented to the Members for
consideration has been finalized.

### Health

Many words have been written about the Logo Development PMC, and its
on-list discussions, about its participants, and whether there are
factions. All of this is arguably true or false, but is materially
irrelevant as long as the PMC is able to make progress. Thus, this
report is not going to cover “health” concerns that others may have
raised.

### Composition

The PMC has recently seen the resignation of Dave Fisher (wave) who is
performing new Foundation duties as VP, Tooling.

The prior VP Logo Development, Jeff Genender, has resigned his
position as of Dec. 6th, 2024. The PMC is recommending Daniel Gruno
(humbedooh) as the new PMC Chair to replace Jeff Genender (jgenender),
and a Resolution has been placed on the Board's agenda.
