Board history: NLPCraft

ASF Oak Leaf Icon

NLPCraft

What the board has decided about this committee or office, and the reports it filed, most recent first. Generated from the published minutes.

These categorised views are best effort. They are read from the published minutes by a program, and what it can attribute to a committee depends on how each resolution happens to be worded — so a page may be incomplete, and nothing here overrides the minutes themselves. The raw minutes are the source of truth.

Please note. The board approves the minutes of a meeting at the meeting after it, and they are published then - so the most recent meeting is not usually here. ASF Members can read the draft in the board's own repository until it is.

A Scala library for NLU applications

NLPCraft has been incubating since 2020-02-13.

### Three most important unfinished issues to address before graduating:

1. Take a clear niche in NLP development by focusing on supporting
deterministic functions and their advantages over the LLM-based approach
in
some application domains.
2. Extending the technology stack
3. Community growth.

### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
None.

### How has the community developed since the last report?

- We continue investigating LLM integration and experimenting with the MCP
approach.
- We continue research mini-projects with potential customers and users,
including LoomHR.ai and Humatron.ai, whose developers may join the
community.

### How has the project developed since the last report?
- Technical PRs processed.
- Research and investigation tasks related to sLLMs and MCP approach.

### IPMC/Shepherd notes:

PJF: The NLPCraft active community is quite small. Possibly, too small to
be able to operate as a self-managing PMC on graduation.

JM: The recent roll call got one person who wants to continue development
and one who wants to continue mentoring. A dev list email on next steps got
no responses. The IPMC may have to consider retiring the project.

### How has the community developed since the last report?
We had several active collaborators since the last report, specifically
working on our Python support. We expect them to reach the committer level
soon. However, the Python support in NLPCraft will like undergo the
architectural change that may delay this process.

### How has the project developed since the last report?
NLPCraft community decided to make a deep refactoring in the project
based on the initial user feedback. The primary goal here is to
significantly simplify the usage patterns and provide better support for
human curation and dialog support. The design & planning for this
refactoring resulted in low commit activity in the last 60 days.

2021-05-19 — in the Incubator's report

Apache NLPCraft is an open source library for adding natural language
Interface to modern applications. Apache NLPCraft has been incubating since
2020-02-13.

### Three most important unfinished issues to address before graduating:

1. Community growth & outreach.
2. Get to the point with multiple release managers.
3. Presenting the project at ApacheCon/ApacheAsia 2021.

### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
Project have several new contributors that we are expecting to formally join
the project/ASF in the future. These are individuals outside of the original
NLPCraft community. We are also getting number of offline contributions when
it comes to ideas, documentation and website. We are working on promoting
these contributions and inviting these individuals to be more active. We
need, however, to get much better at the general project outreach via
meetups, conferences, etc. Some of the conversations happen on Gitter.

Project has 8 forks on the Github.

### How has the community developed since the last report?
Project produced 2 releases. Both releases were an interim, bug fix
releases. So far, they were produced by the same release manager (Aaron
Radzinski). The community is working on the major release 0.7.5 right now
that should go GA in the April 2021 with significant changes and
improvements (all of which are reflected in JIRA tickets for 0.7.5 version).
At this point, the community does not have a formalized roadmap with many
internal discussions happening on Slack channels. We are generally expecting
to formalize the long-term roadmap towards 1.0.0 release with hopefully a
larger community around the project.

Community is actively working on 0.7.5 release that should be sent for a
vote in the coming days.

Dave Fisher - I am rejoining NLPCraft as a Mentor.

Justin Mclean - This report down't contain the needed detail the IPMC

I suggest you ask your mentors if they can put in the time to mentor
this project and if not, they should consider stepping down as mentors.
