OpenDAL

What the board has decided about this committee or office, and the reports it filed, most recent first. Generated from the published minutes.

These categorised views are best effort. They are read from the published minutes by a program, and what it can attribute to a committee depends on how each resolution happens to be worded — so a page may be incomplete, and nothing here overrides the minutes themselves. The raw minutes are the source of truth.

Please note. The board approves the minutes of a meeting at the meeting after it, and they are published then - so the most recent meeting is not usually here. ASF Members can read the draft in the board's own repository until it is.

## Description:

OpenDAL is an Open Data Access Layer that enables seamless interaction with
diverse storage services. Its development is guided by the vision "One Layer,
All Storage" and the following principles:

- Open Community
- Solid Foundation
- Fast Access
- Object Storage First
- Extensible Architecture

## Project Status:

Current project status: Ongoing
Issues for the board: None

## Membership Data:

Apache OpenDAL was founded on 2024-01-17. There are currently 39 committers
and 23 PMC members in this project. The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 1.7.

Community changes, past quarter:

- Hao Jiang (dentiny) was added as committer on 2026-03-30
- Fatorin was added as committer on 2026-04-03
- Krisztian Szucs was added as committer on 2026-05-28
- Hao Jiang (dentiny) was added as PMC member on 2026-06-02

## Project Activity:

OpenDAL has the following releases since the last report:

- Apache OpenDAL Reqsign v0.20.0 was released on 2026-03-23
- Apache OpenDAL v0.56.0 was released on 2026-05-01
- Apache OpenDAL v0.57.0 was released on 2026-06-01
- Apache OpenDAL Reqsign v0.20.1 was released on 2026-06-01

Notable project activity this quarter:

- The Rust core has been split into a facade crate plus smaller core, service,
and layer crates. This makes service and layer development more independent
  while preserving the user-facing facade.
- The community continued to improve OpenDAL's cross-language bindings,
including Ruby publication work, .NET binding work, Python and Node.js API
coverage, Java platform support, and Go/C layer support.
- The core APIs gained richer operation metadata, including copy/read
metadata, copier support, and service-operation labels for HTTP metrics.
- Storage service coverage and behavior continued to expand, including
Volcengine TOS, GooseFS, OPFS, Hugging Face improvements, user-defined
metadata support, and stronger S3-compatible service behavior.
- Apache OpenDAL Reqsign delivered two releases, adding Volcengine TOS
support, Google external account credential providers, expanded Aliyun OSS
  support, and dependency hygiene improvements.

Since 2026-03-18, the main OpenDAL repository merged 264 pull requests from 43
contributors and closed 91 issues. The opendal-reqsign repository merged 42
pull requests from 6 contributors.

## Community Health:

### Are there any risks to the sustainability of the project?

OpenDAL remains in good health. The project continues to receive steady code,
documentation, release, CI, and binding contributions from both existing
committers and new contributors. The main repository currently has more than
5,100 GitHub stars and more than 760 forks, and development velocity remained
steady throughout the quarter.

The PMC is also continuing to grow the committer pipeline. The vote to add
Trim21 as a committer has passed and an invitation has been sent; the roster
change is still pending acceptance and ASF account completion.

### Is the PMC capable of responding to security issues and performing
    releases if needed?

Yes. The PMC continues to make regular Apache releases for both OpenDAL and
OpenDAL Reqsign, and release processes are documented and repeatable. The PMC
is also capable of responding to security reports and coordinating with the
ASF Security Team when needed.

### Does the PMC need anything from the Foundation to improve on contributing
to our mission of delivering software for the public good?

The PMC would benefit from more GitHub Actions runner capacity for the large
cross-platform CI matrix, especially for release validation and behavior tests
across storage services and language bindings.

PMC members would also benefit from access to token quota for state-of-the-art
AI models. We expect to use this for project maintenance work such as code
review assistance, issue triage, release preparation, documentation updates,
and debugging complex cross-language or cross-service failures.

diverse storage services. Its development is guided by the vision "One Layer,
All Storage" and the following principles:

- Open Community
- Solid Foundation
- Fast Access
- Object Storage First
- Extensible Architecture

## Project Status:

Current project status: Ongoing Issues for the board: None

## Membership Data:

Apache OpenDAL was founded on 2024-01-17 (a little over two years ago). There
are currently 36 committers and 22 PMC members in the project. The
committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 1.6.

Community changes, past quarter:
- The project added one new committer during this quarter.
- The PMC roster remained unchanged during this quarter.

## Project Activity:

- No new core stable release was cut in this quarter; the latest stable
release remains v0.55.0, released on 2025-11-24.
- Development remained active, with 191 PRs merged from 47 authors between
  2025-12-01 and 2026-03-10.
- The project continued modularization work by splitting more services and
layers into separate crates and repositories so components can evolve at
  different paces.
- Major implementation work this quarter included reqsign v2 migrations across
multiple services, continued .NET binding work, and new capabilities across
Swift, S3, and local key-value backends.
- Weekly "This Week in OpenDAL" discussions continued on GitHub Discussions
  alongside ongoing community Q&A.

## Community Health:

### Are there any risks to the sustainability of the project?

OpenDAL remains healthy. While this quarter did not include a new core stable
release, the project maintained strong development velocity and broad
contributor participation. The project now has 36 committers and 22 PMC
members, and recent work shows continued progress on modularization,
integrations, and cross-language bindings.

OpenDAL continues to be used by multiple database systems and infrastructure
tools. The PMC's earlier decision to split more components into separate
repositories is translating into concrete engineering work, which should
improve long-term maintainability without reducing community cohesion.

### Is the PMC capable of responding to security issues and
performing releases if needed?

Yes. The PMC has an established release process, has demonstrated the ability
to handle routine dependency maintenance, and continues to make coordinated
technical changes across services, layers, and bindings. If needed, the PMC
can organize releases and respond to security issues in a timely manner.

### Does the PMC need anything from the Foundation to improve on
contributing to our mission of delivering software for the public good?

No requests at this time.

- v0.49.2: 2024-08-29
- v0.49.1: 2024-08-20

## Community Health:

### Are there any risks to the sustainability of a project?

No, OpenDAL is in super healthy at the moment. I'm proud of that.

### Is the PMC capable of responding to security issues and performing a
release of its projects if needed?

Yes, as I have demonstrated in the Project Activity, we release at least one
version per month and can release more if necessary. The PMC is also prepared
to handle security issues, although we haven't encountered any yet (thanks to
our Rust core).

### Does the PMC need anything from the Foundation to improve on contributing
to our mission of delivering software for the public good?

Yes.

The OpenDAL PMC has switched its primary communication channel from the
mailing list to GitHub Discussions. A forward from GitHub Discussions to the
mailing list has been set up to ensure all discussions are archived and
accessible to mailing list subscribers. This change has been highly
beneficial, as we've seen increased participation in discussions and more
contributors joining as a result.

The next area we aim to improve is the release process. We want to create a
fully automated release workflow where committers only need to tag on GitHub,
and everything else can be handled automatically without human interaction.

We want the board to assist us in cleaning up the possibility: Can we set up a
bot account for the OpenDAL PMC to establish a workflow that allows it to
write to SVN?

### Events

#### Results of GSoC

All three GSoC projects have been successfully completed, and the three
participating students have been nominated as OpenDAL committers. Nice!

#### Results of OSPP

One of the students works actively and is a great potential candidate as an
OpenDAL committer. However, the other two students show no activity. The
OpenDAL PMC are contacting them to help remove the blockers of contribution.

## Community Health:

### Mailing List

No reports of the mailing list have been generated. However, I feel that only
a few people actually read the dev list. Most communication happens off-list
on GitHub and Discord. I have been trying to change this trend, but it hasn't
worked well. Maybe the board can give us some suggestions.

### Contributors

Since our last update, the OpenDAL community has integrated 222 pull requests
across 777 files, thanks to the efforts of 49 contributors. Our total number
of contributors has now reached 224, an increase of 20 from our previous
report.

OpenDAL released version 0.47.0 this week.

Now, OpenDAL integrates seamlessly with the developing Apache Iceberg Rust and
Apache Arrow Rust. Additionally, the community is interested in collaborating
with more open source communities.

### Events

The two student-related events, GSoC and OSPP, were successful. Six students
were selected to work on various projects, ranging from additional storage
service support (monofs, opfs) to enhanced protocol support (fuse fs, virtio
fs, ftp), among others.

One student has been nominated as a committer, and two others are strong
candidates for the new committer role. The OpenDAL PMC expect most students at
this event to become OpenDAL committers.

## Community Health:

### Mailing List

- dev@opendal.apache.org had a 50% decrease in traffic in the past quarter
    (106 emails compared to 209)

This is the first time the OpenDAL PMC has performed quarterly reports. Our
data are compared with our graduation discussion, which is quite extensive and
active.

However, the OpenDAL PMC acknowledges that most discussions occur on Discord
and GitHub, which are not sufficiently public. We plan to shift more formal
discussions to a mailing list to ensure the entire community is informed about
our progress, rather than just those who follow GitHub events or have joined
our Discord.

### Contributors

Since our last update, the OpenDAL community has integrated 219 pull requests
across 757 files, thanks to the efforts of 41 contributors. Our total number
of contributors has now reached 204, an increase of 16 from our previous
report.

The OpenDAL PMC has completed the internal refactor, establishing a strong
foundation to attract more contributors and users. We will pay closer
attention to our integrations (such as arrow_rs object_store, webdav, ftp) and
binaries (including opendal command line, opendal gateway, opendal fs). We aim
to broaden the use cases for OpenDAL and ultimately increase our contributor
base.

## Project Activity:

The OpenDAL community is working on a huge refactor focused on simplifying the
implementation and improving performance. We expect this to significantly
simplify the maintenance and extension of opendal in the future.

Meanwhile, the OpenDAL community is involved in GSoC and OSPP events. We've
welcomed several new contributors, with one in particular actively
participating. We see this individual as a potential new committer.

## Community Health:

### Mailing List

dev@opendal.apache.org had a 26% decrease in traffic in the past quarter (167
emails compared to 223).

This report is the first to exclude our discussion on graduation. Therefore, a
decrease is expected. However, as the GSoC and OSPP events continue, we
anticipate a slight increase in traffic.

### Contributors

Since our last update, the OpenDAL community has integrated 66 pull requests
across 526 files, thanks to the efforts of 16 contributors. Our total
contributor count has now risen to 188, an increase of 2 from our previous
report.

Our contributor growth has stagnated, with no new committers nominated since
the last report. The PMC has proposed several strategies to address this
issue, and we are actively working on them. Our primary focus is to streamline
the implementation. After these refinements, it will become
significantly easier for newcomers to contribute.

Since our last report, the OpenDAL community has merged 100 PRs across 209
files, thanks to the work of 18 contributors. Our total number of contributors
has now reached 184, marking an increase of 4 since the last report.

Our contributor growth has slowed, and no new committers have been nominated
since the last report, which is concerning. The OpenDAL PMC plans to implement
the following actions to address this:

- Participate in GSoC to attract more contributors to OpenDAL.
- Enhance documentation for OpenDAL, benefiting both developers and users.
- Simplify the internal implementation logic to make contributions easier.

We expect to see more committers in the next report.

### How has the community developed since the last report?

We have added support for Supabase, SFTP, OneDrive, Google Drive, and
Vercel Artifacts (Vercel Remote Caching), providing more choices to our
users.
We have noticed that some new projects have adopted OpenDAL, and there
are also new users for our bindings who have achieved great results.
We have launched a new project called Oay (OpenDAL Gateway). By providing
a native gateway, we empower users to access different storage through the
same API.
We have also participated in open-source community activities. We are
excited to be part of the Open Source Promotion Plan (OSPP) 2023, a summer
program that encourages students to contribute to open-source projects.

We have improved our documentation for new users and developers and set
up a fast development environment to make it easier for them to use and
contribute.

In the past month, we have welcomed 26 new contributors, bringing the
total number to 86.
