Petri

What the board has decided about this committee or office, and the reports it filed, most recent first. Generated from the published minutes.

These categorised views are best effort. They are read from the published minutes by a program, and what it can attribute to a committee depends on how each resolution happens to be worded — so a page may be incomplete, and nothing here overrides the minutes themselves. The raw minutes are the source of truth.

Please note. The board approves the minutes of a meeting at the meeting after it, and they are published then - so the most recent meeting is not usually here. ASF Members can read the draft in the board's own repository until it is.

Reports

2026-04-15 — Greg Stein

## Description:
The mission of Apache Petri is the creation and maintenance of software related
to assessment of, education in, and adoption of the Foundation's policies and
procedures for collaborative development and the pros and cons of joining the
Foundation

## Project Status:
Current project status: likely-to-terminate
Issues for the board: none

## Membership Data:
Apache Petri was founded 2019-11-19 (6 years ago)
There are currently 8 committers and 5 PMC members in this project.
The Committer-to-PMC ratio is 8:5.

Community changes, past quarter:
- No new PMC members. Last addition was Daniel Shahaf on 2019-11-19.
- No new committers. Last addition was Justin Erenkrantz on 2020-04-23.

## Project Activity:
In-process on reaching out to each PMC Member. One has gone radio
silent. Waiting to hear back from two others.

2026-02-18 — Greg Stein

## Description:
The mission of Apache Petri is the creation and maintenance of software related
to assessment of, education in, and adoption of the Foundation's policies and
procedures for collaborative development and the pros and cons of joining the
Foundation

## Project Status:
Current project status: Dormant
Issues for the board: likely to ask for termination next month

## Membership Data:
Apache Petri was founded 2019-11-19 (5 years ago)
There are currently 5 PMC members in this project.

## Likely Termination
The project has five PMC Members and two have agreed that termination
is the best option for the project. An email to private@ is the next
step with specific attempt to content the other three for
confirmation. There is unlikely enough energy to continue, or to
attempt reconsideration of its original mission.

Note that the project assisted Apache Buildstream into the Foundation
some years ago, but has no other published material. It is unclear
whether the Apache Attic even makes sense given nothing for them to be
a caretaker for. There are some minor impacts in Whimsy to manage.

Project activity over the last quarter related to updating the website to

The Board approved the TLP resolution for our first and only culture -
BuildStream at the last board meeting. The significant change for that project
was a license change from GPL to the ALv2 along with moving from a GNU
project to an ASF project.

We still have some website updates to make regarding BuildStream.

## Community Health:

This quarter we made significant improvements to the Petri website.
Of interest is a new status file - https://petri.apache.org/info.yaml which
has project data and culture status.

BuildStream is making slow and steady progress on their path along
The Apache Way. They are currently in the process of connecting with copyright
holders to change to the Apache License v2.

Since the BuildStream website is yet to be moved, https://buildstream.apache.org
is mapped to the BuildStream status page https://petri.apache.org/buildstream

We've added support for OGL metadata to the website. Future posts to Facebook,
Twitter, and LinkedIn about Apache Petri will look good.

## Community Health:
The significant work on the website was prompted by two factors.
(1) Some questions from Sebb about improving our discussion of The Apache Way.
(2) PRs and Issues from a John Bampton whose contributions include pointers to a
number of tools. For some of his contributions see the tool links on
https://github.com/apache/petri-site/blob/master/DEVELOPER.md

Petri has a low level of activity. We have the attitude that the next
culture we foster will come to us on their own. That may change in the next
quarter.
The plan to grow Petri PMC membership is to consider the Mentors from
cultures once they have become TLPs. Culture mentors are Petri committers.

## Project Activity:
Slow to start. The OSS-Bot project has gone quiet due to Lunar New Year
and Coronavirus. Will attempt to rekindle discussion next week.

Rumblings of a possible project coming soon.

## Community Health:
We need to spend some more time on the website. I think we are all mostly
distracted by other things occurring in the Foundation.

## Project Activity:
- Discussion about OSSBot a community whose goal is to enable synchronous
translation between Chinese and English and WeChat and Mailing Lists. A
concern is that this community is new. It is however forming itself outside
of the ASF. There are a few community members of projects and podlings that
  want to try it.
- Work on the project website. The FAQ is up at
http://petri.apache.org/faq.html More work is needed on the website.

## Community Health:
- We are still bootstrapping.
- We've had 41 emails on discuss@petri.
- Ii's my hope that with the new year we will see communities applying.
