Pony Mail

What the board has decided about this committee or office, and the reports it filed, most recent first. Generated from the published minutes.

These categorised views are best effort. They are read from the published minutes by a program, and what it can attribute to a committee depends on how each resolution happens to be worded — so a page may be incomplete, and nothing here overrides the minutes themselves. The raw minutes are the source of truth.

Please note. The board approves the minutes of a meeting at the meeting after it, and they are published then - so the most recent meeting is not usually here. ASF Members can read the draft in the board's own repository until it is.

# Apache Pony Mail — Board Report, August 2026

## Description

Apache Pony Mail provides mail-archiving, archive browsing, and mailing list
interaction services.

## Project Status

Current project status: New (recently graduated)

Issues for the board: None.

## Graduation Summary

Apache Pony Mail entered the Apache Incubator in May 2016 and graduated to a
Top-Level Project by Board resolution on July 15, 2026 — just over ten years
in incubation.

The community vote on dev@ponymail.apache.org (July 6–10) passed with 7 +1
(binding), 1 +0, and 0 -1. The IPMC vote was subsequently held on
general@incubator.apache.org and also passed. The Board approved the
establishment resolution at the July 15 meeting.

## Post-Graduation Progress

The project has been working through the standard post-graduation checklist
since July 16. Completed items include:

- Updated committee-info.txt and foundation/officers/affiliations.txt
- Updated podlings.xml (status=graduated)
- Removed "Incubating" disclaimers from website and source
- Filed INFRA request for Git repository rename (incubator-ponymail-* →
  ponymail-*): INFRA-28133 (Now resolved)

## Membership Data

Apache Pony Mail was established 2026-07-15 (5 weeks ago). There are currently
11 committers and 6 PMC members in this project.

No new committers or PMC members have been added since graduation.

## Project Activity

Development activity has been healthy during and after the graduation period.
54 commits were made between June and July 2026.

Notable development work in this period:

- **Database schema documentation** — Complete architecture.md documenting the
  full database schema (#320)
- **API token authentication** — Long-term API tokens for programmatic
authentication (#312), contributed by Jarek Potiuk
- **UI improvements** — Encode query/header values in pushState URLs (#315),
filter stopwords from word cloud results (#318), make author names clickable
  as search items (#322)
- **Bug fixes** — Partial fixes for issue #323 (lao-refs), scope fix for
  dedup+dry mode
- **Dependency updates** — certifi, multipart, google-auth, aiosmtplib all
  updated to current versions
- **Branch protection** — Default protection rulesets set up for default and
  release branches (#311)
- **Post-graduation cleanup** — Removed incubation disclaimers from website
and code, updated site build instructions, enabled GitHub Issues for
website, documented how to raise website issues

## Releases

No releases have been made since graduation. The most recent release was
0.10-incubating. The PMC plans to make the first TLP release once the
repository rename is complete and remaining graduation housekeeping is
finished.

## Community Health

The dev@ mailing list saw 70 messages across 22 threads in June–July 2026,
with active participation from 10+ individuals including both PMC members and
external contributors (notably Jarek Potiuk contributing the API token
feature). The users@ list has been quiet — this is expected given the
project's niche audience (mailing list administrators and the ASF
infrastructure itself).

The project acknowledges that it will likely never have a large contributor
community given its specialized domain. However, the existing PMC has
sufficient depth — multiple active committers from different organizations —
to sustain and develop the software.

## Plans

Near-term priorities:

1. Complete remaining graduation housekeeping (repo rename, security contacts,
   graduation announcement)
2. Prepare first TLP release under the new project identity
3. Continue improving documentation and contributor onboarding

## Reporting Schedule

This is the first of three required monthly reports following graduation
(August, September, October 2026). After October, the project will move to its
assigned quarterly rotation.

Making great progress on the next gen suite (Foal), with input from the

well as lots of traffic on the dev@ list.

We hope to engage more of the community as well as grow it, in order to

more people for better project oversight.
