SDAP

What the board has decided about this committee or office, and the reports it filed, most recent first. Generated from the published minutes.

These categorised views are best effort. They are read from the published minutes by a program, and what it can attribute to a committee depends on how each resolution happens to be worded — so a page may be incomplete, and nothing here overrides the minutes themselves. The raw minutes are the source of truth.

Please note. The board approves the minutes of a meeting at the meeting after it, and they are published then - so the most recent meeting is not usually here. ASF Members can read the draft in the board's own repository until it is.

## Project Activity:
Last SDAP release was 1.4.0 on 2024-11-04.

Progress in getting an SDAP release out the door is slow going. SDAP is still
dependent on python3.9 which has already reached EOL. SDAP’s deployment also
depends on bitnami charts that are no longer supported. The community will
prioritize pushing for these necessary updates. There is a work in progress
py311 branch of sdap-nexus.

## Community Health:
Since last quarter, dev@sdap.apache.org had 2 new threads.

### Contributors
Since last quarter, the SDAP community has merged 2 PR and created/updated 2
Jira issues.

The SDAP community has kept up with its monthly community meetings with decent
turnout. Work on integrating SDAP with the new in situ data
services components that leverage Sedona has restarted.

## Membership Data:
Apache SDAP was founded 2024-04-16 (2 years ago)
There are currently 22 committers and 15 PMC members in this project.
The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 3:2.

Community changes, past quarter:
- No new PMC members. Last addition was Grace Llewellyn on 2024-06-23.
- No new committers. Last addition was Truc Nguyen on 2025-01-18.

## Project Activity:
Last SDAP release was 1.4.0 on 2024-11-04.

Over the summer, Riley Kuttruff mentored a summer intern on one of the
projects that utilizes SDAP to develop a service for handling insitu datasets
(as well as, potentially, polygonal datasets (ie, census data)) leveraging
Apache Sedona and GeoParquet.

The goal of this was to replace the existing insitu service such projects
have been using, as it would not be practical to refactor them into a state
compatible with release under the SDAP project.

The proof of concept developed over the course of this internship showed
great promise, and is a high-priority item to be explored for future
integration into the project.

Since last quarter, the SDAP community has merged 3 PR and created/updated

The SDAP community has kept up with its monthly community meetings during which
members recognize that activity has been low. Members recognize that SDAP is
overdue for a new release and have discussed changes that should go into a near-
term 1.5.0 release. However, progress is slow going as most active SDAP
contributors work on NASA funded projects that are impacted by budget cuts.
Contributions to SDAP are expected to increase as stability is regained and new
projects that plan to leverage SDAP start in earnest.

   Comments:
       * The initial draft of the report said that there has been a
release, which highlights a mismatch between SDAP's and ASF's
idea of a release; education is needed.
       * SDAP's number 1 problem is their use of dev@. There is activity
in the project (including commit messages going to dev@) but questions
asked on dev@ go unanswered, and therefore conversations don't
happen. Even the report is drafted on private@ rather than dev@.
I think I can work with SDAP and get them to graduate but only if
       they engage on dev@.
       * I have given notice that I will resign as a mentor by Dec 31st
if I don't see activity, namely a plan to graduate, and activity
       to carry out that plan.

### How has the community developed since the last report?

Thomas Huang delivered a (virtual) keynote address at the 2020 ApacheCon
@Home on 9/29 and discussed our creation of the Apache Science Data
Analytics Platform (SDAP) as a professional open source Analytics Center
Framework (ACF) and its growing list of NASA and international
applications.

The COVERAGE (CEOS Ocean Variables Enabling Research and Applications for
GEO, https://coverage.ceos.org/technology/#software) development team at
JPL completed an initial deployment of SDAP on European cloud platform,
WEkEO (https://wekeo.eu/). Paired with a previously deployed SDAP on
Amazon Web Services (AWS), an objective of COVERAGE is to enable joint
analytics leveraging geographically distributed SDAP installations that
host distinct yet compatible American and European satellite-based and in
situ ocean-related datasets.

Additional deployments of SDAP that are currently being maintained:

 - NASA Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) (
 https://ecco-group.org)
 - NASA Gravity Recovery & Climate Experiment (GRACE) Follow-On (
 https://grace.jpl.nasa.gov)
 - NASA Sea Level Change Portal (https://sealevel.nasa.gov)

### How has the project developed since the last report?

Three new features:
- SDAP-292 Add Cassandra authentication support to delete_by_query.py
script
- SDAP-278 Cassandra authentication for webapp
- SDAP-258 Update Deseason Algorithm to Use Precomputed Climatologies

Two improvements:
- SDAP-284 Collection Manager to support recursive directory structures
- SDAP-285 Solr not indexing lat/lon

Eight bug fixes:
- SDAP-282 Support configuring dimension names and projection during
ingestion
- SDAP-291 netcdf parsing error with GMPE dataset in Granule Ingester
- SDAP-280 Collection Manager should not block when checking ingestion
history
- SDAP-279 Collection Manager does not pick up fs events with NAS mount
- SDAP-267 config operator, manage git url or branch update in the helm
chart
- SDAP-261 bug fixes for new ingestion system (granule ingestion &
collection manager)
- SDAP-277 Better error handling in Granule Ingester
- SDAP-281 bigdata ingestion feedback (reading time)

  1. Make official SDAP (Incubating) Release
  2. Improve/create user guide documentation
  3. Improve committer participation

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

  No.

How has the community developed since the last report?

Committership has been accepted by a community member. SDAP was presented
at a Data Science Workshop @ JPL

How has the project developed since the last report?

SDAP is still working towards its first release. Mentors have provided
some suggestions that will be taken into consideration for the Java parts
of the project, but the python release process also needs to be better
  understood.

A new tool has been published that helps with reading the output produced
  from the Matchup algorithm.

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be

A member of the SDAP podling stepped up to the release manager role which
is great. It shows the the podling is maturing.
Unfortunately, the release candidate which was produced was not in
compliance with the ASF release policy, thankfully Justin highlighted
this and we are in the process of rolling the RC back. Lewis (SDAP
champion) and the release manager are working to resolve this and get the
first incubating release candidate finished.

How has the community developed since the last report?

Two VOTE's have been made over on private@sdap regarding extending
PPMC and Committership to two community contributors. This is very
positive.

How has the project developed since the last report?

SDAP is on the verge of it's first release. With some persistence
the podling will have a release candidate for community VOTE soon.

Dave Fisher: Most of the PPMC listed in Whimsy is not subscribed to
      private@.
The number of developers on the dev list is small. A little too
soon to be thinking about graduation if you ask me.
Justin Mclean: The IPMC usually likes to see 2 or 3 releases happen
      before the project consider graduation.
