What the board has decided about this committee or office, and the reports it filed, most recent first. Generated from the published minutes.
These categorised views are best effort. They are read from the published minutes by a program, and what it can attribute to a committee depends on how each resolution happens to be worded — so a page may be incomplete, and nothing here overrides the minutes themselves. The raw minutes are the source of truth.
Please note. The board approves the minutes of a meeting at the meeting after it, and they are published then - so the most recent meeting is not usually here. ASF Members can read the draft in the board's own repository until it is.
[raw] the published minutes, which are the record. [main index]
Toree provides applications with a mechanism to interactively and remotely access Apache Spark. Toree has been incubating since 2015-12-02. ### Three most important unfinished issues to address before graduating: None ### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of? None, Nothing much of news from previous report ### How has the community developed since the last report? The community slowed down this last couple months and there hasn't been much progress on getting Release 0.6.0 through the incubator review process. The original community plan was to finalize and publish Release 0.6.0 and then push for graduation once the release process completes. ### How has the project developed since the last report? There has been little progress with Release 0.6.0 preparation for RC6 vote. The upcoming release officially brings support for Scala 2.13 and Spark 3.4.4 which is already getting a little old. ### How would you assess the podling's maturity? None, Nothing much of news from previous report ### How has the community developed since the last report? The community has focused heavily on getting Release 0.6.0 through the incubator review process. A significant portion of the recent mailing list discussions involved working through review feedback to ensure the project is fully compliant with graduation requirements, specifically around the proper attribution and packaging of legal files. The community wants to finalize and publish Release 0.6.0 and then push for graduation once the release process completes. ### How has the project developed since the last report? The project progressed through Release 0.6.0 preparation, moving from RC3 up to RC5 votes. The main technical work involved fixing the assembly process so the fat jar correctly includes all licenses and notices from bundled dependencies. We also had some minor repository maintenance, such as updating GitHub Actions for SBT setup. The upcoming release officially brings support for Scala 2.13 and Spark 3.4.4. ### How would you assess the podling's maturity? The community saw a boost in activity working on the bringup of support for Apache Spark 3.3 and Scala 2.13 which culminate in a new committer, but after that it went back to regular activity flow of a stable/mature project. We still see much of the users asking questions in the gitter channel rather than using the mailing lists. The discussion around retirement process was stopped with the boost in community activity. The Apache Toree project recently had two presentations at the European Community over Code conference, drawing a good audience. The attendees showed great interest, posing several questions. This indicates the community should look into opportunities for us to further promote awareness of the project. ### How has the project developed since the last report? Make Apache Training more well known ### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of? As mentioned in the previous reports, activity in the Training project has been very low. There was nearly no mailing list activity in the first quarter, and virtually no commits. ### How has the community developed since the last report? In April, one of the mentors (cdutz) launched a discussion on the mailing list to see what the community wanted to do with the project. Together, we brought up some ideas why the initial enthusiasm for Training materials has sputtered out. Some of the ideas to make the project more relevant and build community include: - maintaining presence and visiblity as in-person conferences return, - encourage conversation and brainstorming about effective presentation resources on the dev website, - changing our focus to include self-learning resources for Apache projects, and - building and publishing Training web artifacts on the project website. Even if it seems that we haven't yet found a clear and compelling niche, the existing community is willing to continue work to see where we can improve. ### How has the project developed since the last report? In my opinion, I believe Toree is one of those small but useful projects
that,
except for being very active, would be ready to graduate. Having said that,

there is an important issue or for voting new members and releases the PPMC

None
### How has the community developed since the last report?
Few Q&A on both Gitter and mailing list. BTW, Gitter is the chat application
that is common around Python/Jupyter extensions and here is the Toree one
https://gitter.im/apache/toree
### How has the project developed since the last report?
Toree is somewhat a mature Jupyter kernel that provides good and stable
support
for both Scala and Spark. On this quarter there were some minor bugfixes
around
Scala corner cases.

Comments: I mostly agree with the assessment that Toree is near
graduation, but is not very active. The community has
demonstrated it is capable of making releases, adding
new committers & PPMC members, and welcoming new
members. My only criticism is how much discussion is
taking place on gitter rather than the dev list. That
makes it difficult to keep up, but I think it is
important to let this community hold discussions in
the forum that makes sense for it instead of trying
to make it fit the mold.

Does the community plan to do another release? It's been nearly a
year since the last. With a "slow, but steady stream of issues and
PRs" I suspect that some of those contributors would like to get a
released version with their contributions. For this community, it
may be a good idea to consider time-based releases to ensure that
contributors get to use their contributions in an official release.

Toree will have a talk at ApacheCon Las Vegas where we will talk about its overall status and current functionality as well as try to attract more users and in particular contributors. After the release of Toree 0.3.0 the community slowed down, mostly due to Toree being somewhat stable and running on top of Spark, where the public APIs in use are also stable. The community needs to work on a release that supports Apache Spark 2.4.x and Scala 2.12. Toree might be one of those low activity projects which have enough active PPMCs (see last ppmc voting thread), and we might start graduation talks based on these facts. ### How has the project developed since the last report? Very little activity on the last few months after the Toree 0.3.0 release, mostly around some compatibility issues with Spark 2.4.x and Scala 2.12. ### How would you assess the podling's maturity? Community member 2mariusvniekerk key in porting Toree to work on Spark 2.0. Sitting on PR 56. Working with committer to finish up some details and will merge when ready. This is a significant contribution. How has the project developed since the last report? 1. JeroMQ community has finalized work to transition to MPL. Waiting for maven release. 2. Addressing issues opened by community Date of last release: None since incubation. When were the last committers or PMC members elected? No new additions since incubation Signed-off-by: [ ](toree) Luciano Resende [ ](toree) Reynold Xin [x](toree) Hitesh Shah [ ](toree) Julien Le Dem
Toree provides applications with a mechanism to interactively and remotely
access Apache Spark. It enables interactive workloads between applications
and a Spark cluster. As a Jupyter Notebook extension, it provides the user
with a preconfigured environment for interacting with Spark using Scala,
Python, R or SQL.
Toree has been incubating since 2015-12-02.
Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:
1. Resolve LGPL dependency: This is in progress, and hopefully we will
have the dependency license changed to a license that is compatible
with AL2.
2. Make a release: 0.1.x branch should be ready for release. Master has moved to start support for Spark 2.0
3. Grow a diverse community: We should put some emphasis on growing the
community and making it diverse (the rule is at least three independent
contributors)
Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?
TOREE-262 - Progress on removal of LGPL dependency
