What the board has decided about this committee or office, and the reports it filed, most recent first. Generated from the published minutes.
These categorised views are best effort. They are read from the published minutes by a program, and what it can attribute to a committee depends on how each resolution happens to be worded — so a page may be incomplete, and nothing here overrides the minutes themselves. The raw minutes are the source of truth.
Please note. The board approves the minutes of a meeting at the meeting after it, and they are published then - so the most recent meeting is not usually here. ASF Members can read the draft in the board's own repository until it is.

## Description: The mission of Apache Training is the creation and maintenance of software related to training materials for Apache projects and the Apache Software Foundation ## Project Status: Current project status: Dormant Issues for the board: None ## Membership Data: Apache Training was founded 2025-08-20 (8 months ago) There are currently 18 committers and 5 PMC members in this project. The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 3:1. Community changes, past quarter: - No new PMC members. Last addition was Andrew Wetmore on 2025-08-20. - No new committers were added. ## Project Activity: Since the last report, there has been little visible activity. There has been no email traffic on the dev@ mailing list during this reporting period. The project does not follow a formal release cycle, as it develops and updates training materials as needed. With Community Over Code approaching, the presentation templates will likely be reviewed and updated as needed. The project did have a discussion with the NuttX project on using the training badge system. ## Community Health: The community remains small but quiet. There has been no mailing list traffic during this reporting period and little visible public activity. However, this is a project that tends to work on materials as needed.
## Description: The mission of Apache Training is the creation and maintenance of software related to training materials for Apache projects and the Apache Software Foundation ## Project Status: Current project status: New Issues for the board: None ## Membership Data: Apache Training was founded 2025-08-20 (5 months ago) There are currently 18 committers and 5 PMC members in this project. The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 3:1. Community changes, past quarter: - No new PMC members. Last addition was Andrew Wetmore on 2025-08-20. - No new committers were added. ## Project Activity: November saw a small amount of activity with updates to training materials, including additions related to vendor neutrality and governance topics. December was a very quiet month with little visible activity in either the repository or mailing list. This reflects the typical activity pattern for Apache Training where the project has a small contributor base and work tends to occur in bursts driven by external needs, particularly around conferences and related ASF training efforts, rather than as steady month-to-month development. ## Community Health: The community is small and stable. Most work continues to come from a small number of existing contributors. Mailing list traffic was minimal in December following limited activity in November, and there were no new contributors during this period.
## Description: The mission of Apache Training is the creation and maintenance of software related to training materials for Apache projects and the Apache Software Foundation ## Project Status: Current project status: New Issues for the board: None ## Membership Data: Apache Training was founded 2025-08-20 (2 months ago) There are currently 18 committers and 5 PMC members in this project. The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 3:1. Community changes, past quarter: - No new PMC members (project graduated recently). - No new committers were added. ## Project Activity: Since the last report, Apache Training has created more training content. New slide decks have been produced covering community building, voting and consensus, ASF governance, podling orientation, banding and identity, and vendor neutrality. Other content created included interactive scenarios/stories for mentors in the ASF incubator. ## Community Health: The community is small but active. Contributor activity has been steady, with a couple of committers regularly involved and a consistent flow of contributions. There was not much discussion on the mailing list this month, and although activity is higher than last quarter, we have not had any contributions from people not previously involved in the project.

The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 3:1. Community changes, past quarter: - No new PMC members (project graduated recently). - No new committers were added. ## Project Activity: Since the last report, Apache Training has continued to make progress on both content and infrastructure. We've updated our website to remove all incubating references. New slide decks have been produced covering Mentor Onboarding, Podling Committer Onboarding, Podling PPMC Onboarding, and Reporting. The project also completed its first official Training Tools release. In addition, the community has held exploratory discussions about experimenting with AI-generated starter decks to support future content development. ## Community Health: The community remains small but active. Contributor activity has been steady, with several committers regularly involved and a consistent flow of pull requests. Most changes are merged quickly, showing efficient collaboration and maintenance. While review activity is concentrated among a small group, mailing list discussions are healthy and have drawn participation from a broader set of contributors. Apache Training was also represented at Community Over Code NA, further raising its profile across the ASF. Overall, the project is in good health and activity levels are increasing compared to earlier periods.
## Description: The mission of Apache Training is the creation and maintenance of software related to training materials for Apache projects and the Apache Software Foundation. ## Project Status: Current project status: New Issues for the board: None ## Membership Data: Apache Training was founded on 2025-08-20 (1 month ago). There are currently 18 committers and 5 PMC members in this project. The Committer-to-PMC ratio is roughly 3:1. Community changes, past quarter: - No new PMC members (the project graduated recently). - No new committers were added (the project graduated recently). ## Project Activity: During August, there were discussions across areas such as content generation, infrastructure, and badge issuance. The most active thread focused on whether and how to issue open badges for training courses. Other discussions covered the structure of starter training decks, the transition to GitHub issues rather than JIRA, and broader questions about how best to present and generate content. ## Community Health: Apache Training is in good health. As a newly established top-level project, community activity in August was steady, with a focus on laying the foundations for our training materials and refining our infrastructure. The project will also be featured in a talk at the upcoming Community Over Code NA conference.
The Training project aims to develop resources which can be used for training purposes in various media formats, languages and for various Apache and non-Apache target projects. Training has been incubating since 2019-02-21. The Training project aims to develop resources which can be used for training purposes in various media formats, languages and for various Apache and non-Apache target projects. Training has been incubating since 2019-02-21. For the last few months we have been discussing graduation, and getting our various ducks in rows. We believe we are ready to graduate, but have only four people who have elected to stay on as PMC members, which seems to us too small a number. So right now we are discussing what the next steps are -- go ahead and graduate, or attempt to grow that number a little. ### Three most important unfinished issues to address before graduating: A. While discussing graduation, we had a number of people indicate that they are no longer engaged enough to move to that final step. ### How has the project developed since the last report? We have continued to slowly work on content. And one of our number got a talk accepted at Community Over Code 2025 to present about the project, so hopefully several of us will be there for that. ### How would you assess the podling's maturity? The Training project aims to collect, and share training resources, and develop tools to support training resource creation (templates, etc.). The resulting tools and curated training artefacts can be used for training purposes in various media formats, languages and for various Apache and non-Apache target projects. Training has been incubating since 2019-02-21. ### Three most important unfinished issues to address before graduating: 1. Review and eventually simplify the release process for training artefacts - or at least confirm finally, that we use the existing flow as it is to go on 2. Establish a sharing culture with other projects - Apache Training needs a link to other projects so that the training artefacts can be owned but contributed by the creators of the project, but share via Apache Training 3. Grow the community so that non-tech contributors can find a home inside the ASF, by joining Apache Training as tech-writer, translator, or educator who helps us to spread the words. ### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of? - nothing critical right now ### How has the community developed since the last report? - the last report was delayed, to access issues but now it works. - the collaboration between Apache Wayang and Apache Training has been established - the joint presentation at the CoC 2024 in Bratislava is a result - one non-tech contributor (from CISO domain) has been interviewed and we work on his onboarding ### How has the project developed since the last report? - I did multiple attempts to release the tools-subproject, but due to permission issues I am not able to to go through the full procedure. - I still need support to sort out this access permission issues. ### How would you assess the podling's maturity? The Training project aims to develop resources which can be used for training purposes in various media formats, languages and for various Apache and non-Apache target projects. Training has been incubating since 2019-02-21. In June 2023, we started adjusting the project goals. Besides a pure focus on content creation tools we have identified the need for two additional aspects: (1) For ASF processes some documentation exists, e.g. https://community.apache.org/contributor-ladder, but the ASF member journey is still a challenge for many new members, especially those with less coding experience. As a solution it has been suggested to provide training material for the following problems: * You've just graduated to a TLP. What are the challenges you will now face? * New committer onboarding * New PMC member onboarding * New PMC Chair onboarding * New board member onboarding (2) Creation of some general recommendations/guidelines for: * managing/validation of training material contributions of arbitrary ASF projects has been proposed. We expand our focus now on the following aspects: We have to work on strategies to increase the participation and the visibility of the project and its goals. Besides requests for contributions from individual contributors from other Apache projects we want to show what the Apache Training project can offer to those projects. We should build on the assumption that synergy and network effects can help us to increase the community around training and skill management topics. ### Three most important unfinished issues to address before graduating: 1. Improve the community participation (other Apache projects should actively be linked to this project, since they "have the content") 2. (Re)define the short-, mid-, and long-term goals of the project. 3. Select an approach to handle non coding / non document related tasks (e.g., community related activities on events) 4. Create a strategy how this projects contributes to or is supported by other Apache projects 5. Create a tutorial on how the tools provided by this project can be used to create own content 6. Review current policies around contribution review and releases to find a pragmatic compromise ### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of? The Training Project needs more contribution from other Apache projects, hence a clear communication strategy for interlinking existing projects with the Apache Training project is needed. We need feedback from other Apache projects on the presentations and trainings developed till now. In order to improve this collaboration we suggest to investigate the status of other project’s documentation in a systematic approach, especially with an eye on available training related material. ### How has the community developed since the last report? no changes ### How has the project developed since the last report? Initial discussion regarding usage of content created/delivered by LLMs has been started. In July, a first documentation inspection and fact extraction tool (Python script) has been provided. A pull request is open: https://github.com/apache/incubator-training/pull/87. ### How would you assess the podling's maturity? Please feel free to add your own commentary. Initial setup oft he project’s structure: Goals and strategy needs refinement. Working towards first release: What type of artefacts to release is not clear, due to unclear goals and strategy. Community building: The community exists of a very small number of people but is more or less invisible, as of today (April 2023). Nearing graduation: Currently, we are far away from graduation. ### Date of last release: ### When were the last committers or PPMC members elected? November 2020 ### Have your mentors been helpful and responsive? Mentors have been responsive and helpful when reached out to. ### Is the PPMC managing the podling's brand / trademarks? The name search process has not yet been started, as there is still time to do that if and when graduation draws nearer. The PPMC is actively monitoring usage of the Podlings current name on other sites. The Podling is not directly affiliating with any sponsors donating content and presenting an independent image on the webpage. ### Signed-off-by: - [X] (training) Craig Russell Comments: Happy to see new activity here. - [X] (training) Christofer Dutz Comments: It seems that finally a bit of life has been coming back to the project, I'll continue my best to help with that staying that way. - [X] (training) Justin Mclean Comments: - [ ] (training) Lars Francke Comments: ### IPMC/Shepherd notes:

The topic of retiring the project has been discussed multiple times but
someone (Mirko) from the community
has stepped up in a last effort to revive activities.
He's written most of the last two or three reports.
At least one mentor has mentioned that he'd step down if those attempts
are not successful.
### How has the community developed since the last report?
Activity has started to grow since the last report.
We again failed to provide the report on time, but this will change soon.
Two persons joined our conversation on the dev-list (Eric and Rich).
### How has the project developed since the last report?
Creation of a ASF onboarding training module has been announced.
A tool for inspecting documentation in Github repositories (ASF projects)
which will lead towards automatic training related content extraction has
been started.
PR activity continues on a low level since the last report.

### IPMC/Shepherd notes:
Dave Fisher - this project does not really release software and it looks
like it is becoming more of an ASF Member Project.
I think that since it plans to document process that is more
traditionally part of ComDev's mission or related to helping
projects. I would support either graduating into ComDev or to a TLP as a
project similar to Whimsy. I really do not see
further Incubation to be helpful.

Review current policies around contribution review and releases to find a pragmatic compromise ### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of? Unfortunately, not much has happened since the last report in February. We did add one new committer but other than that there has been hardly any activity. While we'd like to blame the current situation in the world for this it wouldn't be a fair assessment as we had the same problem in the previous period. We still believe the idea of the Training project is a good one and E-Mails are being responded to so the project is not dead. It's a lack of time and dedicated resources that is at least partly to blame for this situation. We hope that development will pick up again in the future. ### How has the community developed since the last report? Review current policies around contribution review and releases to find a pragmatic compromise ### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of? - There currently is a lack of involvement by the PPMC in the project which caused stagnation in mailing list participation and overall project progress. The PPMC is currently taking steps to address this by focusing on promoting new committers and being more involved again. - The current review and release process seems to be overly complex and scary and hampers contributions. Discussions around relaxing this are ongoing. ### How has the community developed since the last report? Activity on the dev list has declined since the last report, total number of posts was November 37, December 13, January (to be updated) 84. ### How has the project developed since the last report? - We have refactored the Maven structure to make adding new projects much easier by using an archetype, this should help make the project more accessible to a lot of people. - ApacheCon themed templates are under development that will be available for speakers at future conferences - An introductory Hadoop slide deck was contributed and is currently undergoing review. ### How would you assess the podling's maturity? Community is gaining traction with new contributors getting added to Apache Training project. - The total number of posts in August 60, September 94, October 174. In October, some new contributors have started active discussions on the Training project. There are ongoing discussions to use Docker, and new kind of review commit model for content contribution. - We created JIRA contributors group. ### How has the project developed since the last report? - We added more content to the Training project. E.g. Spark slides, Apache Ignite intro slides, Github workshop slides, ApacheCon slides - We also added a GitHub puzzle to Training content. - We initiated work to Dockerize the tools used in project. - We started new policy for reviewing content contribution. - We have delivered our first release during which we ironed out a few issues. - The release contains the training slides in Asciidoctor, so that these can be run as slideshow. - The release followed the voting process and was made available on Github for general public. - There were multiple talks about the Training project at both ApacheCons this year ### How would you assess the podling's maturity? Training has been incubating since 2019-02-21.
Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:
1. Agree upon underlying technology stack and architecture for training
content
2. Develop first training topic contents
3. Set up our contribution process
Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?
- no critical issues at this point in time
How has the community developed since the last report?
- The project has been set up recently, so there is an initial
activation/development towards a community.
- The dev mailing list is active. The total number of posts in March was
160 and in April 140
- Total number of subscribers is 32 (25 in March)
How has the project developed since the last report?
- The scope of the project deliverables and core procedures are still
under discussion (e.g. what makes a release?)
- We have had our first few commits. They were for infrastructure (e.g.
website) and repository structure
- We have been approached by a few more people wanting to donate content
and we hope to be able to accept it soon
- We actually have the first issue for an actual content donation (Apache
Way, ZooKeeper and Git) and hope to have it included soon, the first ones
will probably be slow while we work on processes and best practices

How has the project developed since the last report? - This is our first report covering a full month - We have decided on a Website technology and we have had our first few commits (LICENSE, README etc.) - The scope of the project deliverables, core procedures, details regarding website, and code management are still under discussion - First offers of content donations have been made - We welcomed our first regular contributor to the mailing list from outside of the original list of contributors - There are plans to talk about the project at both ApacheCons this year There are lots of parallel discussions happening. We have made some initial decisions (e.g. website) but there are lots of topics still left to be discussed. The major one is on whether or not to chose a canonical technology into which we want to convert our training material and the organization thereof (e.g. multilingual content and acceptance of material in different formats e.g. PowerPoint, Google Slides). The project is a bit different from most others which come with existing code bases, existing communities. We have to start from "first principles" so it's not unexpected that this takes a while.
